As things stand, Siege is a potentially brilliant game that's smothered by the very people who would benefit if it succeeds. You don't have to look far in the FPS graveyard before seeing games that deserved better, and Evolve's corpse is so fresh it's almost twitching. No game has a divine right to succeed, though. Zealots like me can only pray Ubisoft sees the light, even if it may already be too late.Online-only game retailer, code seller and general provider of cheap products Kinguin have announced they're opening a store specifically for the sale and trade of CS:GO weapon skins for cold, hard cash. They're not the only ones, with G2A having their own section of their store for similar purposes. There is third party selling of codes for skins in other games like League of Legends, but the nature of the economy is so different that they're less of a currency, more of a luxury item, and less procurable for selling. You can't both use and then resell a code for PAX Sivir, for example, while a Crimson Web Huntsman Knife is good to go whenever.Beyond adding the long requested silenced variants of the M4 and USP, the Arms Deal update favorably added weapon skins to the game. To those from the outside it seemed like a minor addition to the budget-priced title in an effort for Valve to monetize it further. However, a large portion of those who actively played CS: GO saw it as a monumental addition similar to Team Fortress 2's cosmetic items.It's a system that tends to push players to spend a little at first to see if they get lucky, before they feel compelled to spend a whole lot more in hopes of earning their initial investment backIn addition that that meeting, Overkill has arranged to meet with many of Payday 2's top modders, and assigned 8 Overkill developers to actively engage with the community in the Steam forums, starting from next week. Many members of that community have been predictably vile in the comments underneath the statement, including several calls of "Fuck you Overkill", and at least one that asks the developers to kill themselves.The studio addressed the matter in a Reddit AMA a few weeks ago, explaining its decision to add microtransactions to the game after stating years ago that it wouldn't, but the anger hasn't gone away. Probably because those microtransactions are still in there, and haven't been changed in any big way.Professionals were invited to play the game and offer their thoughts. Valve's Chet Faliszek explained that their early access was granted because they could "talk intelligently about the game", whereas with the masses, constructive feedback can be hard to come by.Finally Patch 1.3, released January 14, claimed to introduce more anti-cheating protections, but this was (understandably) light on details. As Ars readers know, there's nothing better than spotting a cheater, but I'm also cautious of being too hasty, because people online shout "cheat" all the time. It's not endemic but there are definite cheaters in Siege, and a wall hacker is an enormous problem in a game where you can be shot through most walls. Don't get me started on the lack of a structure to deal with griefers and teamkillers, because we could go on like this forever.

The Steam trade holding system directly targets hackers’ ability to offload items from hijacked accounts. If an account doesn’t have secondary security authentication turned on and isn’t sending items to a long-term (presumably real-life) friend, those items are going to sit with Valve long enough for someone to report their account has been compromised. This change has been met with frustrated users, 28,000 of whom signed a petition to end it.This security measure comes at the expense of usability. Gamers who can’t access a smartphone with Steam's second factor authentication app, for example, will have to sit through the waiting period when they try to send an item to a friend. It just takes a little patience, but it’s still a nuisance that the hackers themselves are happy to exploit.
If you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. The screenshot above is a random selection of items from G2A's store, numbering up to hundreds of dollars. These are items that players will just have sitting around, some of them going unused, some of them dearly held collectors items, some of them in the hands of those totally unaware of what they're worth. Those players are already customers of these stores and will be looking to buy and sell at all times. Post-launch, a new operator will set you back 25,000 renown, which Ubisoft reckons will take around a mere 25 hours to unlock, which is fine, because our time on this planet is absolutely not precious and I plan on expiring at the achievable age of 142. For dedicated players that sounds reasonable, though. Alternatively, you buy a new operator with real cash for $5, which translates to 600 points of R6 credits. Higher tiers of weapon skins can only be bought with real money.
Gamasutra recently sat down to play some CS:GO with Le, and chat about his thoughts on Counter Strike and the industry in general. Here's Le in his own words.I was working with Valve for about five years, and I left at the end of 2006. I started a new game called Tactical Intervention. I guess a lot of people wonder why I left Valve -- everyone wants to work at Valve, right? I think at the time, they were at the stage where there wasn't a lot of push towards a new Counter Strike game. At the time they were working on Team Fortress 2, and I felt that I wanted to focus more on a game that was similar to CS.This is important, since to the active Counter-Strike community the professional scene embodies the competitive aspect of the game in a way the monetary interests of developers and the easily-appeased masses can’t. While the developers and player base can change or play the game without a competitive dimension in mind, the possibility of professional players fixing matches indicated the intrusion of frivolous aspects into the complex mechanics that made CS:GO an interesting eSport in the first place. There is a “competitive spirit” that eSports shares with sports. The comparison can be justifiably made, since CS:GO itself has the same depth and complexity as any sport. At the top level of play it requires the same conceptual tools and time dedication to improve, as well as an extremely high skill ceiling.Online gambling is illegal in many European countries and CSGO Lounge does not appear on the register of approved gambling providers in France or the U.K., which do permit some online betting. Neither does EGB.com, a Costa Rica-based site that also allows users to bet on eSports using real money.CSGO Lounge says on its web site that placing a bet represents a confirmation you are “in abidance with your country’s laws” regarding gambling, including minimum age.
